North Uist, South Uist and Benbecula North Uist is a remarkable island. Half the island is covered with a mixture of sea and freshwater lochs, sparkling into brilliance when the sun shines. During stormy seas, a natural water spout sprays seawater into the air at Tigharry, and with views across to the Monach Islands where some 9000 seals are born every year, North Uist is a reminder of the unpredictable and beautiful forces of nature.
Stroll along wide sandy beaches, breathe the ancient sea air and free yourself.
The only inhabited island in the sound of Harris, reached by a causeway from North Uist is the fascinating Island of Berneray. It is a small island (roughly 2 miles by 3) rich in wildlife and history, with a long sweep of white sand on the west coast, backed by high dunes and machair. The island is famous for the birth of Giant MacAskill - 7’9” tall, and for visits of Prince Charles. It is an island of real beauty and tranquillity.
South Uist is the larger of the Uists, with a recently constructed stone causeway to Eriskay. This is the birthplace of Flora MacDonald, who famously helped Bonnie Prince Charlie during the attempted Jacobite Rising. The west coast of South Uist is home to amazing white sandy beaches running continuously for about 20 miles - perfect for simply letting go and revelling in your own solitude. In complete contrast, the eastern coast is characterised by inlets, bays and dramatic cliffs - providing the opportunity for quiet contemplation about the diversity of nature.
If you take the time to explore, you may find yourself connecting with that part of yourself you thought you had lost long ago........
Benbecula has the wind of change in its soul. Although it is the administrative centre for the Southern Isles, if you take the time to explore you will find breathtaking shallow sandy bays giving you the peace and space you need to clear your thoughts and reassess your priorities.
Stay and explore the magnificent eastern part of Benbecula - and let a sense of history and quiet solitude wash over you. |
