Foula and Papa Stour

Foula is not a place for peace and quiet – this is the place to come if you are ready to embrace nature with all its noise, whirlwind pace and sheer vitality.   The very name of the island, Foula, means Bird Island.  This is home to thousands of sea birds, all living their lives energetically at full volume.  In this area of islands dotted like gems amongst the sea, Foula is truly isolated.   Visit Foula and experience the true meaning of the word escape. A place for reflection, and to ponder the rich and varied abundance of wildlife.

Papa Sour is full of history – its name (“big island of the fathers”) derives from the Irish priests who settled here before the Vikings, and excavations are constantly revealing new additions to the rich history already uncovered on the island.  If you feel you are an old fashioned romantic adventurer at heart, Papa Stour deserves a visit, as does Kirstan Hole, a spectacular sea cave.  The sea may resist and try to keep this striking cave from you, but romantic adventurers are not easily deterred.  Experience the beauty of nature by taking a walk along the coast and wonder at the stacks that rise from the sea – a testament to the strength of both water and rock.  Imagine yourself as alone on the island as the Irish priests, and wonder if they could have found a more perfect place on earth to get closer to heaven.
